Thunderstorm - Sam Andersen

Dear Grandma and Grandpa,

I'm sure that you are aware that the tri-state area (DelMarVA area) is going to experience some nasty weather, including hurricanes, tornados, and of course THUNDERSTORMS! You know how thunderstorms are up here, the rain, the wind, and of course the roaring thunder! But I bet you didn't know that thunderstorms have to have winds of 58+ mph, 3/4 inch of hail, or produce tornados to be considered severe. The sad part about that is that Delaware is expected to experience all of the conditions above! Right now we're preparing for the thunderstorm by making sure none of our windows are leaking and that the doors aren't letting in a draft.

Thunderstorms are created when a warm front and a cold front come in contact with each other. The cold front pushes the warm air up, some of the condensation is released, and some heat is released, this forms the cumulonimbus cloud (or sometimes called the thunderhead) which in turn causes the storms to begin. Although thunderstorms only last thirty minutes to around two hours, they can be dangerous, and I'm not just talking about the lightning. While mpst people think that the most damage from a thunderstorm comes from lightning, it actually comes from the dangerously fast winds, hail, and tornados that accompany it. Thunderstorms prefer the summer and spring months, but they're ready to unleash their wrath at any givin time (like now). Also thunderstoms can move in lines (or walls) but some of the most dangerous thunderstorms are isolated.

I'll call you when you the storm is over, but for now you can find out all about thunderstorms here,

Sam
