Dear Nana,
I've been watching the news lately and I heard that a category 5 hurricane is coming to Tampa very soon! It's going to be a little scary but I think you'll be fine. I have some information I'd like to share with you so that you feel prepared for the category 5 storm. Category 5 storms don't happen often and 3 category 5's have been on US soil so this might be rough.
Well hurricanes are tropical storms with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 mph winds. If the winds are less than 74 mph it isn't considered a hurricane, but a tropical storm. The eye of the storm is normally 20-30 miles wide and could be 400 miles long!! During hurricanes there is torrential down pours, very high winds and storm surges.
You probably are used to hurricanes because you live in Florida and the ocean and warm air always strengthens a tropical storm and could turn it into a hurricane. Tropical storms rotate around a central area of low pressure, which explains why there is an eye. Once it is centred around the low pressure system it is called a tropical depression if winds reach 34 mph it is a tropical storm and like I said before 74 mph is considered a hurricane. Click here for more info on how hurricanes evolve. The reason Delaware doesn't get as many hurricanes as you do each year is because once a hurricane moves into the northern part of the US the cold air weakens it and it doesn't have an ocean to feed off of, so the hurricane normally dies by the time it could reach us. You are probably going to have to deal with hurricanes a lot now that you live in Florida. The good news is only 50 out of 608 tropical storms turn into hurricanes!! But, some hurricanes can last up to 2 weeks and cause serve damage to the environment and the people living there.
Don't worry about it you'll be fine! I'll talk to you more about it tomorrrow during the storm!
Love ya!
Maddie Russo
