Hey Emily,
I just got your letter! What terrible news that is? I'm absolutely terrified of thunderstorms myself, but i finally got over that fear when i found out some safety precautions to keep me alive.
First off you need to know how bad off the thunderstorm is, and what is coming in it! A thunderstorm is classified as severe when there is winds starting at 58mph and hail the size of a dime! Pretty scary huh? Normally severe storms come with lightning, hail, heavy rain, flooding, and strong winds. So watch out and always stay aware of forecasts.
I hope your inside your home because that is where you will be safest! Make sure you don't use the phone, let alone touch it! Stay away from windows cause something can bust the glass. In case the power goes out you want your nifty flashlight to save the day! Remember lightning can strike anywhere at any time so unplug your TVs and computers cause if they happen to get struck, they are fried. Since plumbing is metal it will "attract" the lightning so DO NOT even think about any bathing!
I know you can't drive but let your mom and dad know that if they happen to be driving, to slow down and pull over. Stay in the car but don't touch anything metal! But promise me you will not go outside! Just keep in mind, if your ever outside when this occurs stay low and find some sort of shelter away from tree's and other tall objects. And don't go in water, trust me on this one, most people die that way!
You have to follow these instructions till the storm has passed. They normally last 30-60min but if you hear that the storm is a "supercell" thunderstorm, it means it can last for hours! Can even turn into a tornado. Just stay updated cause warnings will appear on tv and a watch JUST means its possible a storm could happen. If your still curious go to this website. Please dont worry and take a deep breath and everything will be just fine :).
From your cousin,
Christine :P
